Pole Files Interview 2: Natasha Wang Pole Dancer

I have had the great pleasure of interviewing Natasha Wang. A truly amazing pole dancer. She holds many Championship titles at different pole competitions around the world.

Lets find out a little more about Natasha Wang.

Quick Bio.

Natasha Wang is a pole performer and instructor who holds the titles of US Pole Dance Champion 2011, USPDF West Coast Champion 2010, California Pole Dance Champion 2010, and East Meets West Miss Pole-AM 2010. She has been a guest performer on The View on ABC and Good Day L.A. on FOX, and has performed with the Doug Aitken art-theater project "Black Mirror" starring actress Chloe Sevigny that premiered in Athens, Greece in June 2011.

A late fitness bloomer, Natasha began taking pole dance classes at the age of 29 with no previous dance or gymnastics experience, a journey which eventually took her from S Factor to The Pole Garage, Be Spun and Kinetic Theory Circus Arts, where she studied contortion. Natasha currently instructs and trains at Los Angeles’ The Choreography House and Be Spun, and is a principal dancer with Kelly Yvonne’s Girl Next Door show. She is sponsored by X-Pole, Kelly Maglia Couture, Dew Point Pole and The Choreography House.

A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a BS in Advertising and a BA in French, Natasha has worked as a publicist for nine years and is a published poet.www.natashawang.com

How long have you been doing pole dancing?

7 ½ years, since 2004.

The moment you realised you love pole dancing?

It wasn’t love at first spin for sure! But definitely within a few months I fell in love with the sensual movement and sense of sisterhood I felt at the pole studio. It wasn’t really about the pole tricks back then because I actually wasn’t a very fast learner…I just loved being able to choose my music for my free dance every week and embodying a different character (as per our class assignments.) I’ve always loved telling stories, so I totally embraced this challenge.

Describe your style.

Lyrical and story-based. I try to tell a story with a beginning, middle and end in my routines.

Favourite move?

I love the fonji (i.e. the kamikaze) – especially because it’s such a challenge! I’ve been doing the move for almost
over a year and it still scares me half to death. That’s a move you have to respect.

Watch the video to check out Natasha doing the Fonji!!!

Tools of the trade, what can’t you live without when pole dancing?

My ‘grip kit’: iTac2, Dew Point, Dry Hands and Kramer’s Firm Grip. As I’ve been traveling and teaching around the world, I’ve come to realize different countries and pole studios have such different environments for poling that it pays to have grip solutions for every climate/type of pole!

Any hobbies or passions outside of pole dancing?

All the hobbies I have outside of pole dancing feed into it – contortion, yoga, dance classes, Chinese pole…as for passions outside of pole dancing, I have a devoted fiancĂ© and two awesome cats.

Can't live without?

My aforementioned grip kit!
